Lower Primary Writing

Ages 6-7 years

Students develop descriptive writing, opinion writing and learn to write about specific topics that are of interest and relevance. In this course, our writers will use fiction and non-fiction genres as learning tools and develop their punctuation and spelling skills.  They will develop an understanding of sentence structure and cultivate different literary techniques to enhance their writing, building up a portfolio of work.  

In this course, students will:

  • learn to structure their writing for different purposes and use descriptive sentences
  • learn to edit and review written work      
  • develop skills to write descriptively and in detail, create cards for special events, distinguish between fact and opinion, and write opinions for book and movie reviews    
  • improve their written grammar.

Middle Primary Writing

Ages 8-9

Students will have the opportunity to explore an array of theme-based topics, which will act as stimuli for writing and develop their writing skills. In this course, our writers will use both fiction and non-fiction genres as a springboard for writing, developing their language and literacy skills.  They will learn how to self-and-peer-edit their writing effectively for improvement and how to use a range of techniques to enhance writing.  The following writing skills will be developed:

  • Written grammar
  • Writing interesting introductions to hook the reader
  • Journal writing
  • Writing about a personal experience
  • Comparing and contrasting
  • Logical writing in paragraphs
  • Essay writing
  • Giving written instructions
  • Conclusions
  • Descriptive writing

Upper Primary Writing

Ages 10-11

Packed full of interesting topics to spark creativity. Our writers will explore different writing structures, develop grammatical structures relating to specific genres, practise proof-reading and editing skills and learn how to avoid common grammatical mistakes.  They will continue the journey of self- and peer-editing and develop their creativity and imagination, focusing them on their journey to become a strong writer.

The following writing skills will be developed:

  • Written grammar
  • Persuasive techniques to introduce new products
  • Letters of explanation
  • Logical writing in paragraphs
  • Effective use of synonyms and pronouns to avoid repetition in sentences
  • Organisation of essay writing and logical development
  • Formal and informal styles of letter writing

  • Travel writing
